Den building is a key part of woodland learning. The willow plantation at Cliffs Farm is ideal for building small shelters or dens which the children can use for all kinds of role play. There are enough spaces within the area for all the children to be part of a woodland village and create their own imaginary place.
They create their own names for their own ‘houses’ ‘roads’ and ‘shops’, names such as ‘Willow Avenue’ and ‘Elder Road’. The children are provided with the resources they need to create terraces of den houses with kitchens, living rooms and gardens. They can play in the bakers shop, café, village hall or market place. Older children can use the village for a mapping exercise or an exploration of the features of a village and draw comparisons with real villages.
